Hill Walking In The Fort William And Lochaber Area

The Fort William area has some of the most amazing hills and mountain in the UK. From low-level to high-level there's are hundreds of walking routes

Hill walking and low-level walks are extremely popular in the Lochaber area - hardly surprising when you realise how good our local mountains are. Low and medium level hill walkers have lots of choice of routes with some walks only a few hours long and others are all-day walks. We recommend visiting Nevisport's bookshop in Fort William or online and picking up one or two walking books for references.

Fort William has a local walking group who go out most weeks and welcome new members.

Some of our advertisers offer guided walking and these are a good way to get more confidence and experience of some higher, but still mostly walking routes. If you are looking for a couple of suggestions, then we recommend the walk in Glen Nevis through to Steall Falls, and a hike up to the CIC hut on Ben Nevis from the North Face carpark in Leannachan Forest, Torlundy - there's a really good path through the forest which although starts out quite steep, soon levels off and opens up to great views of Fort William and of course The Ben.

There is so much information about walking in this area, we are reviewing how to present this to you. Essentially, local outdoor shops sell a variety of walking and guide books about the Lochaber area, and this is a good source of information.

In Fort William there are walks around the villages, along the shore of Loch Linnhe and the Caledonain Canal banks. Cow Hill is a small hill at the back of Fort William which has some well-developed tracks suitable for walkers and mountain bikes, and these provide great views of the Fort William and Glen Nevis area.
