Real Cask Ale Guide to Fort William and Lochaber

After climbing or walking up and down Ben Nevis, you might need a great pint of real ale. This page lists some pubs in Fort William that sell real ale

After a superb day out in the Outdoor Capital you might like to know where to get a good pint of cask conditioned ale. Well, this is the right page to find the best pubs in the Fort William area who serve high quality, cask conditioned real ale.

On Fort William High Street The Grog and Gruel is a locally owned business which is very popular with walkers and climbers, and stocks between three to five cask ales, almost all Scottish beers. Garrison West offers one or two cask ales in its bar restaurant in Cameron Square.  The Ben Nevis Bar has a guest ale and at the end of the West Highland Way in town, The Great Glen offers a good selection of both English and Scottish cask ales. Fort William's newest pub Black Isle Bar, is owned by Black Isle Brewery and offers two cask ales and specialises in freshly made pizzas. Over in Caol, by the Caledonian Canal, The Lochy Bar stocks a cask ale during the summer.  The Ben Nevis Inn at Achintee where the Ben Nevis mountain footpath begins usually stocks two Highland cask ales. Also in Glen Nevis - the Glen Nevis Restaurant & Bar offers two or three cask ales during the summer months

In Roybridge,  The Stronlossit Inn looks after their cask ales and usually have three beers on tap. At Inchree, near Onich is The Four Seasons Bar and Restaurant who have a nice countryside pub with good cask ales. In Glencoe The Clachaig Inn provides a large range of fine cask ales.

From Mallaig, a boat trip into Loch Nevis will take you to The Old Forge at Inverie where cask ales and good food are on offer - as well as an interesting visit to this remote area of the UK.

When drinking cask conditioned ale - insist on only the best - if your pint is served with condensation dripping down the outside of the glass, then it's far too cold and is not being served properly, and will have lost some the natural flavours which the brewer painstakingly added when he made it. Beer is mostly expensive nowadays, so don't settle for anything other than a perfect pint at the perfect temperature.
