The Queen visits Fort William too!
Her Majesty The Queen has visited Fort William on two occasions in 1958 and 1989, arriving on the Royal Yacht Britannia.
Her Majesty The Queen has visited Fort William on two occasions - once in 1958 and again on 12 August 1991. On both occasions she arrived by sea onboard "Brittania".
On the first occasion, British Pathe were on hand to record the event, and produced a very interesting video showing several aspects of the visit. You can see the video if you click through to British Pathe website - and you can buy a copy of this to watch on DVD.
When Her Majesty arrived in 1991 to celebrate Fort William's Tercentenery we were around to record "Brittania" entering Loch Linnhe through Corran Narrows. We didn't have access to video in these days but we did take several superb medium format (6 x 7) transparencies of the vessel looking splendid in our Highland landscape.
Our photograph is now a very historical record of "Britannia" as the flags flying confirm that the Monarch was embarked at the time, and the vessel no longer sails the world's oceans. It is an exceptional photograph in that there are no other vessels in the photograph. We sent Her Majesty a framed copy of the photograph, which we are told she enjoyed.
You can visit "Britannia" at Leith in Edinburgh.
