The Commandos

Commando monument at Spean Bridge

During World War II Allied soldiers came to Spean Bridge for Commando training, which was part of Churchill's strategy to fight the Nazis all over Europe.

British Commandos, United States Army Rangers and soldiers from Canada, France, Netherlands, Czechoslovakia, Poland and Belgium trained there. As live ammunition was used during training, there were some casualties whilst training at Achnacarry Castle.

Find out all about this monument and the Commando history in Spean Bridge at the local museum.

This monument was erected to commemorate the supreme sacrifice of all Allied troops and today is a poignant symbol. Each November a commemorative service takes place around the monument with local people, former servicemen and a platoon of British Commandos. Lochaber High School pupils produce the musical accompaniment.

The area is considered sacred to the memories of those who fell in the service of their country. When visiting the monument, please respect the peace and tranquility.
