Outdoor Bushcraft and Survival Courses

Take yourself into the wilderness with experienced bushcraft and survival trainer and learn about the ecology of the forests and woodlands of the Highlands.

Lochaber based, ecologist-led bushcraft and survival school. Wildwood Bushcraft run bushcraft days and weekends throughout the year in beautiful woodlands in Glen Nevis, other sites in Lochaber and the Trossachs. We offer a range of bushcraft courses for individuals and families, as well as tailored bushcraft events for small groups, organisations or corporate teams. Our courses include bushcraft and survival weekends, woodland crafts, wildlife tracks and signs, firelighting with sparks and friction, knots and cord making, wild food and coastal foraging, plant ID and uses, and navigation skills.

The school was founded by Leon Durbin, who is both a qualified bushcraft instructor and an experienced wildlife biologist with a PhD and a BSc in Ecology. Our activities are fully insured and carefully planned in a framework of safety for participants and care for the environment. All our courses provide plenty of practical hands-on experience with expert guidance where needed. Get in touch and we'll do our best to give you an unforgettable wild experience in the Highlands. Free Spirit Boat Hire
Free Spirit hire boats are neat clean silent-running electric powered motor boats that are easy to drive and a perfect opportunity to enjoy the peaceful, scenic Caledonian Canal for an hour or two. Couples, car-loads and coach-fulls of all ages are catered for with safety equipment supplied by us.  We are proud members of  Neptune's Staircase Activity Hub, established by Scottish Canals to open the Caledonian Canal up to many more users than ever before. Free Spirit electric boats are the first of their kind on the Scottish Canal network.   SOMETHING TO REFLECT UPON! The opportunities for a day out at Neptune's Staircase are extensive. -A self-drive boating adventure with Free Spirit.  -Refreshments at the Moorings Hotel, at the canal side next to the car park. -Kayak and bike hire from Rockhopper, half way up the lock flight. -Harry Potters Steam Train, from Fort William to Mallaig. A day out in itself. -Or, twenty minutes drive from Free Spirit Boat Hire you could be watching the steam train glide over the now well know Harry Potter flying car bridge atGlenfinnan. (A perfect spot to view from above can be reached via the short path up the hillside to the left and behind the visitor centre there. The monument on the beach across the road is also a must-see.  Before or after all that you might ride the Gondola up to the Golden Goose Cafe at Nevis Ski Range. To mention but a few! Boat Capacity 3 large adults, 4 medium sized adults, family of 5. One adult with 4 to 5 children depending on ages.   We encourage youngsters to steer the boats so they gain valuable experience while on the water. They will enjoy receiving their "I've Been a Free Spirit" badge to mark their achievement.   From wildlife spotting to counting the jumping trout (which you can fish for by the way), steering and navigating, there is an abundance of memorable moments to be enjoyed and taken home.   Couples can share a unique experience together. Families, often three generations in one boat can spend magical moments amid the mountains. Groups of friends always come back in our boats pleasantly surprised at how nippy they are. We offer children's birthday party and school trip packages.    Directions Heading north out of Fort William on the A82, turn left at the Ben Nevis Distillery, onto the A830 Mallaig road. One mile down, cross the Caledonian Canal and turn first right into Banavie to find ample parking. Free Spirit boats launch from the pontoon just beyond Top Lock, 2 minutes walk from the car park. Photography Courses & Field Trips
Learn to take better digital photographs on one of our photography courses. Digital photography is a fantastic, well-developed medium for capturing great photographs and video. Its never been easier to take good photos - with a little help and advice. I offer personal One-2-One photography courses, tuition and excursions in and around the Fort William and Ben Nevis area to anyone who wishes to learn more about their digital camera, and who wants to take better photographs. If your interest is in landscape photography or video; portrait photography or outdoor sports photography, I can help you get the best out of your camera. Each field trip can be tailored to suit individual needs. I can arrange 2-3 hour photography field trips for up to 3 persons. If you have a DSLR camera and a tripod, one of my short photography courses could be just for you. If you don't have a DSLR just yet, I can provide advice about these and offer you the chance to take photos with a Canon 5D and a variety of lenses and equipment. Photography Field Trip for 1 person: £85.00 Photography Field Trip for 2 persons: £150.00 Photography Field Trip for 3 persons: £195.00 During the photography field trip I will show you how to control camera aperture and shutter speeds; help you understand how to work with depth of field; understand working with different focal length lenses; show you how to improve photo composition; demonstrate how to tweak your photographs afterwards.
